the following are guidelines for sustainable employment.

The job must be permanent (the job will last longer than 91 days), full-time for at least 30 hours per week for full-time and it must pay starting out minimum wage or minimum wage.

If a job offer is made, you will need to assist the young person to deal with employment matters with employers, in terms of communicating to ensure both parties have clear understanding of the job expectations and conditions, including:

  • position description, employment agreement and employee rights
  • working conditions – health and safety, working environment,
  • pay – wages / salary; probation period
  • hours of work
  • skills development – induction, industry specific skills and training
  • career pathway – performance incentive, promotion, other position within company
  • further training – industry qualifications, apprenticeships.

When the young person secures employment, you will need to:

Stage Steps
Stage one: Young Person secures employment (30 hours per week)

YS Provider confirms young person meets employment outcome definition

  • You will need to upload contractual employment agreement, letter on employer letterhead outlining job offer, hours, duration
  • Note in ART – YP has obtained sustainable employment
  • Add a Need under category type 'Employment' and need type 'Full time / part time employment'
  • Update the young person's 'Employment-part-time/full-time' Activity
  • Assess the young person for EWRA assistance, Transition to Work Grant (TTW), and notify YSSU via ART task

Work and Income has a number of supports that can help young people enter the workforce.

  • Transition to Work Grant - a non-taxable, non-recoverable payment that can be made to help meet additional costs essential for transitioning into employment. 
  • $5k to Work – an incentive payment for clients who are relocating for work. 
  • Course Participation Assistance – financial assistance to help clients take part in training and work related skills development. 
  • Flexi-wage Subsidies - a wage subsidy and extra assistance to support employers to take on people who do not meet the entry level requirements of the job.
