When evidence is required

Every young person applying to include a child in their financial assistance must have an interview and provide a written statement or complete a child inclusion form.

Acceptable child inclusion evidence

When a young person applies to have a child included in their financial assistance, the following evidence must be provided:

  • identification for the child
  • a letter or email from previous caregiver (if applicable)
  • any additional information to support the inclusion. For example, a letter from Oranga Tamariki.

When excluding a child from a young persons’ financial assistance, evidence must be obtained that the child is no longer in their care.

Evidence may include, but is not limited to, a letter or email from:

  • the young person (a personal details form can also be accepted)
  • the child's school.

Excluding a child from the young person's benefit may result in a change to the young person's obligations. You must ensure all changes (including benefit rates) are explained to the young person.
