temporary additional support

a payment to help taiohi cover regular, ongoing payments for essential living costs

Temporary Additional Support is a weekly payment that helps taiohi when they don't have enough money to cover their essential living costs.

how it works

Temporary Additional Support is non-taxable extra help paid for a maximum of 13 weeks. It is paid as a last resort to help clients with their regular essential living costs that cannot be met from their chargeable income and other resources.

It's here to help taiohi cover regular, ongoing payments for essential living costs. taiohi who receive this payment will need to be accessing all other assistance available to them, and take reasonable steps towards reducing their costs and increasing their chargeable income.

who can get it

Taiohi can get Temporary Additional Support if they:

  • are over 16
  • are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • normally live in New Zealand and intend to stay here
  • have a minimum deficiency of $1.00 after calculating the formula for Temporary Additional Support
  • have essential costs that they have no other way to pay for.

It also depends on:

  • how much they earn
  • any money or assets they have
  • whether we can help you in other ways
  • the types of essential costs you're paying for
  • what you're doing to reduce your costs or increase your income.
