young partners of working age clients

The way you support partners of working age clients is different to other young people.

Learn about how you can support a young partner of someone who receives a working-age benefit.

how youth service providers can help young partners of working age clients

In Youth Service we have some young people who are in a relationship with someone receiving a working-age benefit (like Jobseeker Support).

You'll support the young person with their youth activity obligations, some admin and some add on payments. Their partner (we call them the "primary") will manage their shared payments with a Work and Income case manager.

meeting their youth activity obligations

You'll help the young person to meet their youth activity obligations. You'll need to help them with:

  • being in full-time education, training or work-based learning
  • attend and participate in regular engagement with you
  • participating in a budgeting programme
  • having their money managed
  • for parents,
    • attending a parenting programme
    • keep up to date with Well Child Tamariki Ora checks
    •  enroll their children with a Primary Health Organisation, and

what you can't help partners of a working age client with

There are some things that the working age partner needs to apply for on behalf of the couple through Work and Income.

These things are:

  • Temporary Additional Support
  • Waiting for Benefit Decision
  • Accommodation Assistance - Change of address/Accommodation costs
  • Transition to Work Grant
  • Relocate for Work Support
  • Change in Relationship
  • Child Changes.

The above things cannot be done by the Youth Service providers as they affect the benefit shared between the young partner and the working-age partner.
