An Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number is required to ensure we hold the correct information for tax purposes.

When young people apply for financial assistance, they are asked to provide their IRD number.

YSSU will attempt to match the young person's IRD number directly with Inland Revenue. If the number does not match, YSSU may contact the Youth Service provider to ask the young person to provide proof of their IRD number.

acceptable ird number evidence

When a young person is asked to provide IRD number evidence to support their application, the evidence from Inland Revenue must show the:

  • young person's full name
  • IRD number
  • Inland Revenue’s logo, and
  • web address (if providing a screenshot).

Examples of acceptable IRD number evidence are:

  • paper copy of a letter from Inland Revenue
  • digital copy of a letter from Inland Revenue
  • myIR screenshot or photo (including web address).

ways we can accept evidence of an ird number

Online

  • Email – you must copy the full email, including the sender, receiver, date and time details, onto the young person's file.

Face to face

  • Provide evidence at a meeting with a Youth Service provider or local Work and Income office.

An applicant must not be granted a benefit unless MSD has received from the applicant a claim for a benefit made by way of—

(a) an application form that complies with regulation 172; and

(b) any supporting evidence reasonably required by MSD.
