housing support when a young person is isolating or in lockdown

we continue to provide emergency housing support with longer grants where appropriate.

COVID-19 information for boarding house landlords and tenants

Boarding house landlords must allow their tenants to self-isolate in their boarding room if they are instructed by a health official to self-isolate at home due to COVID-19.  Tenants must follow the guidance from the health official on self-isolation.  Boarding house landlords cannot end a tenancy because their tenant is in self-isolation, or has recovered from COVID-19.  Discrimination against tenants, including illnesses such as COVID-19, is an unlawful act.

Please make sure you share this with your regional resurgence leads.

emergency housing

We want young people in emergency housing to get support that reflects their circumstances.

If a young person is isolating or in lock down, we revert to COVID-19 business processes and rules and therefore can grant up to 21 days

Also remember:

  • On a first grant, you should only grant seven days
  • We can’t grant for check-in date that’s more than seven days away, or in the past
  • Health officials will contact young person if moving into quarantine facility is required.

transitional housing referrals when safe

We’ll continue to refer young people to transitional housing providers, except those with shared facilities, where these can be done safely and efficiently.

Providers, young people and contractors need to comply with Ministry of Health guidelines for social distancing and hygiene. We encourage as much phone or video-based interaction as possible.

public housing assessments over the phone

We’ll continue phone-based public housing assessments if a young person is isolating or in lockdown. Young people may need to wait a bit longer for their appointment as we support the immediate needs in the most-affected areas.

public housing placements

Public housing placements are continuing in the new COVID-19 Protection Framework across Aotearoa, including between regions with different traffic light settings.
